The Performance and back up of an Inverter depends on its battery during power cuts. It’s the Back bone or heart of any Home UPS or Inverter.
Inverters Keep Supplying Electricity to all the equipments connected on its circuit, just like our other latest home appliances, your Inverter and its battery requires regular maintenance for effective operations and longer backup life.
Though maintaining the Inverter and Battery would be done by a qualified technician, below are some useful tips and suggestions to increase the back up of your Inverter .
SWITCH TO ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTS AND OTHER APPLIANCES:
Go for energy saving devices to reduce power consumption from inverter batteries.
For example, an ordinary bulb of 60 W or 100W uses 75- 80 % more energy than a CFL or LED bulb to provide the same amount of light.
Similarly a ceiling fan with better copper wiring consumes lesser power than a fan with poor quality winding. Poor quality copper winding increases the resistance and increases the load on inverters. These days branded energy efficient fans are available in market which consume only 50 Watts ( 50% of a regular fan )
SWITCH OFF UNWANTED LOADS DURING POWERCUTS
The habit of switching off unnecessary lights and fans during power cuts will not only extend the Battery backup but also charges the battery faster when the main power returns .
Typically, a fully discharged battery takes approx 6- 7 hours to charge it back to 100 % and these 6-7 hours is when the charger gets activated in the inverter and consumes additional electricity for the charging.
Therefore, when we use only the essential devices when the power fails , we not only enjoy a long backup but also save money as the battery is charged faster because of lesser usage.
TIP: This practice of switching off unwanted lights and fans can be implemented every day even when using on main power hence reducing your Power bills .
GET BATTERY WIRES & CONNECTORS CHECKED.
Some times during relocation, we ourselves fix back the inverter if UPS provision is already available. The Battery wires should have proper lugs and should to be tightened to a certain torque. If these is not done properly, there is a loss of Power and the battery wires too get heated up . This usually results in lower back up as the battery doesn’t get charged properly and doesn’t give the 100 % output due to the loss.
Also it’s not that only topping up of distilled water is required, the terminals have to be free from corrosion, rust and dust to give you the desired back up .
